Sailing - bowsprits and asymmetric poles
I was reading some of the older posts and there was a discussion on adding a bowsprit. It seemed like nobody had done it yet. I was wondering if any of you have added a bowsprit, and which ones you added. Were you happy with it? This is the one that looks most interesting. I installed a retractable Selden bowsprit and am very happy with it. Aug 1, 3, Catalina Wabamun. Welcome to the marina. Been there, made that. Based on the 3" Selden ring, which is larger than my home shop could easily handle, I also crafted a top-down rig for the kite, which after a few mods, works quite elegantly.
Was it cheaper than buying one?Because the bowsprit kits I found on the market were all either too beefy, too expensive or just plain ugly, I decided to fabricate one on my own. It was obvious that these little screws would be no match for the loads a sail would impose on them if the bowsprit were used in winds up to 20 knots—the top end of my desired range. A ft2 sail in those conditions can generate sheet loads of over lb.
These then would be magnified by the unsupported bowsprit acting as a big lever and could result in a potential upward load on the roller of 1,lb or more. This was sobering: all the more so since there was insufficient room belowdecks to install larger screws.
Sweet success and no new holes drilled! It was also easily removable, meeting yet another one of my requirements.
The next step was to come up with a suitable sprit tube, one that would be thick enough to prevent it from buckling around the bail at the top of the anchor roller.
To create a safety margin, I made it from a 3ft aluminum alloy tube with a 2. Tubes of all sorts of dimensions and in various lengths can be purchased online from McMaster-Carr mcmaster. The force on the aft end of the bowsprit is mainly downward, so the mount on that end is needed mainly to hold the bowsprit in place. Finally, to give my bowsprit a professional look, as well as to protect it from the environment, I had a white marine powder-coating applied.
Many shops provide coating services for recreational uses. I used Prism Powder Coating prismpowderusa. My finished bowsprit is easily deployed, rests on top of the anchor and is held in place by the anchor-roller bail. On Solaceit allows my gennaker to clear the bow pulpit and jib roller to prevent friction when furling.
The bowsprit is also easily removed.
I simply detach the carabiner to stow the unit. Last two requirements met! The poles supplied are either thick-walled aluminum, with inside diameters ranging from 2.
The rule of thumb when installing an aluminum pole is that two thirds of the length of the pole must be supported; hence, the further forward you want your sprit to protrude, the longer a section you will need. It slides through a circular stainless steel collar with a low-friction liner that an be affixed to the foredeck or to the side of an anchor roller.
Two padeyes are bolted to the deck in line with the bracket, and the aft end of the pole is secured to one of these, depending on whether it is extended or retracted. A separate tackline runs through the bowsprit, or a tack block can be fitted at the forward end.
They include end fittings, a collar and deck fixing blocks. A fitting that allows the collar to be bolted to the anchor roller is optional.
The deck blocks are nearly flush-fitting, and the collar can be removed from its deck block to leave a totally uncluttered foredeck. The built-in stopper for the tack line is a nice touch.I have looked at two alternatives - the Trogear Bow Sprit and the Selden tube. I like the Trogear, it's an all around better product that feels like it is part of the boat and is more suited to reaching conditions.
The Selden is ok, the fit and finish isn't as nice though. I have had both on different boats. I like the trogear better than the selden. The on the deck pole and fittings just adds clutter and since you will be using it with a Code Zero you are still going to need a bobstay.Image deblurring using python
Depending on your deck construction I think trogear is stronger. I had my trogear painted to match the hull. If you race, do a proper bowsprit. J-Boat style or a TP style. For berthing concerns, just make sure you can unbolt the sprit when not racing. I installed a Trogear on an S this year. Well made product and a lot less intrusive on deck compared to the Seldon.
I'm set up for Syms and Asyms on a pole. My Trogear doesn't go much further than the pole so was able to use existing A1, A2, A3 without recut. Have dropped the pole for now and can sail up round the cans vs. I'm planning on adding a Code Zero to the set up in the spring. Pretty sure I'll put the pole back on for any serious offshore work, but quite happy with the product.
Couple of pics. Right now I back in and the prod sticks out into the marina. Really should hang a round orange fender on it If you go ahead and need some round G10 for the bobstay attachment, let me know. Had to order a 5' long piece and used 6". Drilling through the hull on an angle near the waterline is not for the faint of heart.
Measure a couple of times first! Use the sprit to gybe the assym and then put assym back on pole. The kiwis did that way back in 90s in the IACC. Basically this is how we were doing it before the sprit, just off the bow tack point.Download it here. Menu Menu. Search Everywhere Threads This forum This thread.

The person who posted this video on YouTube claimed that Trogear does not offer a warranty, but that is not the case. The product looks like it would tick most of my "pros" boxes. Angry Aussie never tells us what voided the warranty, racing would include recreational use, so that leaves improper sizing or fitting. Your boat doesn’t have the Bowsprit? You can install it now, his name is Trogear
I have a Catalina 28 mkII circ I am interested in installing a Selden after market bowsprit kit because I single-hand and feel it would be easier to fly an asym with this top-down furling system to decrease time out of cockpit. Does anyone have experience doing this and given deck layout, how would the bowsprit be placed so as not to block the forward anchor hatch?January 2021 public holidays kuala lumpur
